Should these items be presented to withstand the harshest critique? A safehaven? Freud, although ridiculed now, (sexually deviant secret police(tm)), wrote at a time when dreams were considered to have universal meaning for all persons. Basically, one person's dream patterns were the same patterns for everyone with the same significance.
Not of necessity, this probably has much to do with the emotional fortitude of the author. If the criticism is non-impacting, as it were, then the most vitriol devices can be used. His contention then, was that the dream was an individual phenomenon that was based only upon that individual's experiences. He also introduced the concept that dreams existed primarily for wish fulfillment, i.e. they stood in place for unrealized goals or wishes in life.
Sometimes "shock methods" can be quite appropriate for the moment. The moment, whatever ideological bent, can sometimes benefit from the most extreme positions. Basically a sacrifice of the piece to the wolves as the bulk of the ideology slithers into the mind of the masses. This is an important signpost in the time period, because it began to shed light on dreams being part of the individual less of supernatural reflections/revelations of God. His theory may be incomplete however, as Jung further refined aspects of it and re-synthesized a common shared experience.
Ideologies, the true fanatic inducing organisms. Do these thought forms, these memes take on minds of their own. Do the users control/create them...or do they control the users (when was the switch made, there was a baby in the cradle when we lay down last night, not this many tentacled thing!)
Mesmer created memorization (secret non-truth).
Yet we cringe in horror against the tide of beginning. (Probably the main reason for the split between the two --- Freud felt Jung was taking his science back to the occult)
Intense concentration feeding the repressions in the unconscious mind resulting in forceful explosions of... did you see Cassini slip unnoticed around Time itself?
