On Potential...
Everyone knows common phrases such as “We are not living up to our potential” or “She has a lot of potential.” But what does this mean?
One possible definition by the OED is:
2. Possible as opposed to actual; existing in posse or in a latent or undeveloped state, capable of coming into being or action; latent.
Similar to Schrödinger’s Cat, the famous cat torture device that leaves a cat in suspended possibility (of life or death) until the observer collapses the waveform by opening the box. In this, we exist as waveforms until we collapse into a method of action or being. We believe ourselves to be real and what we think or feel as real, but is this valid? One model would contend that we are only a collection of accidental aggregation of experiences that then defines us (and controls us). Sadly sucking up every experience and hastily assembling it into the mongrel we call ourselves, we nurse from the poison breasts of religion, society, our parents, and so called friends and lovers…indeed the world. If so, and if we have techniques to assimilate or destroy these programs…what are we then? Robots? Machines?
Perhaps we are truly pure potentiality at the core. Perhaps we are not what we believe ourselves to be. Perhaps a love of chocolate is merely because Aunt Margaret loved chocolate and impressed it on us before we remember it…and a million Aunt Margarets impressed it upon her. Extend this concept to every mode of being/thought/behavior. We are perhaps a mere collection of parts. What of it?
The true power of this model lies in its ability to allow us to overcome ourselves. At the root of all that is evil, we find our reflection staring back at us. The release of restriction leads to the release of ourselves and whatever bad/good positive/negative behaviors and thoughts we contend with. For restriction is a mere collapse of the waveform of potential. Once this is realized, we can go even further into finding our potential and becoming masters of ourselves instead of reactionary mongrels.
Yet, herein lies a problem. If we are to begin guiding ourselves into better modes of thought and action, how can we verify that they are actually “better” modes and not merely another program? One solution is the concept of a “higher” self or a god/goddess or whatever (random phrases from a good science fiction book would probably give as good of guidance as most gurus!). Yet these concepts are also fraught with danger as these methods can lead to self-delusion or at least bad guidance. A method of filtering this information also deals with the concept of restriction. Basically, if the guidance received tells us to eat only white foods on Thursdays (or that homosexuality is a sin), obviously this has collapsed the waveform of possibilities. So reject it!
We must seek experiences to open ourselves. In doing these methods we will lose our friends/family/and lovers. This is unless they have also embarked upon the path. Truly a phoenix reborn from the ashes of ourselves, but be aware that society will willingly hold the torch to our pyre and destroy us (without the Work being performed.) We will be despised and persecuted, for change is anathema to the robotic life. You will prevail if you have the courage to destroy yourself.
Do what Thou Wilt shall be the Whole of the Law. Love is the Law, Love under Will.
Restriction is the Word of Sin.
(it’s only a model…shhh!)
